Red is also still going strong.

As soon as that first cool breeze blows, we start thinking about fall beauty. (Okay, who are we kidding? We start thinking about it on August 1.) Like spring, fall is synonymous with rebirth—putting aside the lazy days and sunkissed highlights of summer in favor of something warmer and richer. It’s kinda like swapping your summer Aperol spritz for a glass of red wine or hot cocoa when you really think of it!
“Fall is always about the return to warmth,” says celebrity colorist Jenna Perry, who works with stars like Kaia Gerber and Emily Ratajkowski. “Everyone’s always excited about adding new fall pieces of clothing in their wardrobe and that excitement translates to hair color. Even the smallest shifts can make a huge difference,” she says. “I love to take an ashy, bleached out summer blonde and start to warm them up with a gloss or lowlights for fall. It’s like reactivating a canvas.”
Ready for your own fall refresh? Below, get a head start on fall with the top color trends of the season. See you at the salon!
Rose Crimson

Channel your inner Chappell Roan with a fun twist on fall red. “We have seen rich copper tones trending over the last few years and this fall we will see red tones deepen and take on a stronger true red tone,” predicts Ian Michael Black, global artistic director of hair color for Aveda. He loves a “vibrant red jewel tone with a soft pink shimmer” to give hair a “deep intensity and opulent feel.” Use a gloss at the salon to add that pretty pink tone to your hair. “A great way of achieving this is by first coloring the hair a beautiful ruby shade, and then having a pink lacquered gloss over the top using a diluted vibrant pink direct dye to achieve the true jewel-like finish,” Black explains. See you at the Pink Pony Club!
Smoky Brunette

Perry took Kaia Gerber several steps darker over the summer, resulting in what she calls a “smoky brunette” shade, with little to no warmth and lots of lush, dark color. “It’s such a classic fall look,” she says. “This is great for any brunette who wants to add more depth. Ask for a single process or a gloss.”
Golden Brunette

If you prefer warmer tones, try a golden-tone brunette for a little glimmering, shimmering luxury. “Since darker shades are always most commonly on trend during colder seasons, this color matches perfectly with the weather and gives the hair a fresh look,” explains celebrity hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos, citing Olivia Culpo’s shiny shade as inspiration. At home, he recommends refreshing your shade with L’Oreal Paris’ Le Color Gloss One Step In-Shower Toning Gloss.

Going red for fall may be an obvious choice, but it’s a classic one! “Deep red colors stand out for the season because they complement the weather perfectly,” says Giannetos. “When you think of fall, you think of coziness and leaves falling, red and brown undertones come straight to mind and are what makes that hair color special.”
Misty Mocha

A more glamorous name than “mushroom” brunette, misty mocha is a “slightly cool-toned” color that is “especially good for those who are naturally dark and want to lighten their hair without warmth,” says Black. “A very neutral color that gives an understated elegance to the wearer and is flattering to most skin tones.” Ask your colorist to lighten hair with a cool blonde and neutral lighter brunette shade for dimension, then gloss over the entire head with a cool neutral mocha shade, he recommends.
Chantilly Blonde

Looking for a way to warm up your summer blonde for the fall season? Godard recommends Chantilly blonde, which he describes as “a light, warm blonde with subtle creamy undertones, resembling the light and airy qualities of Chantilly lace.” It’s a bright but soft blonde that suits a variety of skin tones and a gorgeous way to transition your blonde to the new season.
Cayenne Copper

Transition your faded cowboy copper into a brighter, more vibrant tone for 2024. Colorist and textured hair expert Leysa Carrillo is a fan. “Fall colors bring the warmth that juxtaposes the cooler weather,” she says. “Deep reds, earthy browns, and rich oranges bring a sense of warmth that people crave once the season changes.” Her red pick for fall 2024 is a copper shade, which she says is perfect for “those who like to experiment and make a statement.”
Redken master artist Sean Godard says this fiery red “combines deep red and orange tones, resembling the titular spice: cayenne pepper.” At the salon, ask for varying shades of red and copper for a multi-dimensional effect. “Cayenne copper is an excellent choice for those looking to make a striking and dynamic change to their hair color and a step up from last season’s cowboy copper trend.”
Chocolate Brown

Another fall mainstay is the beyond iconic chocolate brown, a shade that never, ever goes out of style. “This timeless shade offers warmth and depth, perfect for the season,” says celebrity colorist Chase Kusero, co-founder of IGK, citing Zendaya’s 2024 Oscars color as a gorgeous example. “Request a rich, chocolate brown with subtle lowlights for added dimension.” At home, he recommends trying IGK Permanent Color Kit in Warm Up.
Carrillo co-signs the chocolate brown trend. For curls, she recommends adding “golden caramel or honey highlights” for a “natural, sun-kissed look.”
