Halloween Egg Carton Crafts
Halloween egg carton crafts are a super eco-friendly (and inexpensive!) way to have plenty of kid-friendly festive fun.
Kids don’t need store-bought craft kits full of plastic crap. You don’t need to have to spend the money and store the resultant junk, either. Letting kids make their holiday crafts from upcycled materials scavenged from the recycling bin is a more authentic and creative art experience for them, and it’s certainly cheaper for you.
And if the result remains junk, well… you know where the recycling bin is!
For some reason, kids think that egg cartons are shockingly fun to craft with, and happily, they’re also one of the more ubiquitous items you’ll find in the recycling bin. Even if you don’t eat store-bought eggs, you definitely know someone who does. So this Halloween, empty out the recycling bin of all those lovely egg cartons, hand them over with plenty of open-ended craft supplies, and let kids craft their own decorations. While they’re at it, check out my list, below, of my own favorite Halloween egg carton crafts, and see if there’s something that YOU want to make, too!
Egg Carton Bat
Googly eyes are the main ingredient to making many holiday crafts look adorable, and they’re also the main ingredient here! To avoid having to use them, draw eyes onto white paper and then cut out and glue. For a big shortcut, pre-cut the egg cartons and spray paint them black, although that also eliminates most of the fine-motor activity and creativity from the project.
Egg Carton Jack-o-Lantern
These egg carton Jack-o-lanterns are so simple and sweet, and I love their little painted Jack-o-lantern faces. The author has the brilliant idea to use old twist ties for the pumpkin stems instead of the usual pipe cleaners or popsicle sticks, and a few dried beans hidden inside the pumpkin give it enough heft to keep it upright.
Egg Carton Pumpkin Patch
Here’s a craft that turns into a quiet toy for a preschooler, or a storytelling prop for a group of children. Paint a variety of backgrounds and put the kids to work painting a variety of egg carton pumpkins, then put on a play!
Egg Carton Monsters
Everyone gets to exercise all of their creativity with these egg carton monsters! Just supply lots of paint, glue, miscellaneous embellishments (don’t forget the googly eyes!), and plenty of egg cartons, and before you know it, you’ll have yourself a whole mob of monsters to show for it.
Ghost and Bat Bunting
If you’ve got loads of egg cartons sitting around, this is one way to use them all up! I love upcycled buntings as a great way to incorporate multiples of whatever material you have in excess.
Eyeballs
Whether you’re perfecting your Argus costume or just want to look extra attentive, you can craft yourself SO many eyes using egg cartons!
Autumn Wreath
If you tend to cook eggs for a crowd, here’s another way to use up a LOT of egg cartons! This seasonal autumn wreath would look lovely from September through November, but if you wanted to make it specifically Halloween-themed, change your paint colors to green, orange, black, and purple.
Pumpkin Wreath
If you’re not quite up to the time (or eggs!) required to make that autumn wreath, above, this pumpkin wreath is simpler, and will set you back only a dozen or so eggs.
DIY Spider
My favorite thing about this egg carton spider is how realistic it is! Choose your favorite spider so you can copy the paint job, and don’t forget the correct number of legs, and most importantly, the correct number of eyes!
Halloween Egg Carton Masks
I think it’s nice for even younger kids to help make their own costumes, and that’s even better when the process is so open-ended and hard to mess up as this project is! Let kids be as creative as they want painting their masks, because everyone knows that kids in homemade costumes get the most candy!
Floating Halloween Egg Carton Ghost
Stash or scrap tissue paper makes this ghost look extra floaty. To make your ghost super cute, choose the tissue paper first, then paint the egg carton to match!
Styrofoam Egg Carton Ghost
Cardboard egg cartons are better for the environment than Styrofoam, but sometimes you just can’t avoid using Styrofoam. There’s no great loss without some small gain, however, and the beauty of Styrofoam egg cartons is that they make excellent easy ghosts–all you need is a pair of scissors and a black Sharpie!
