One Dozen DIY Coasters That You Don’t Have To Sew!
I’m obsessed with DIY coasters, and I want you to be, too!
DIY coasters are the perfect craft project, in my opinion. They’re small enough that you can make even the most intricate one in less than a day. You can make them using your favorite craft techniques and materials, whether that’s quilling or mosaics or sewing or woodworking. And you can never have too many! There’s always room for one more set of Halloween coasters that come out only in October, or just one more quilted mug rug so you can always have one living on your night stand.
DIY coasters also make great gifts, and since they’re so small they’re not too much trouble to whip up as a housewarming gift or, my personal favorite, a gift for a young adult. Even thrifted, dumpster-dived, or IKEA furniture deserves to be kept nice!
Below, check out my list of favorite DIY coasters that don’t involve sewing. I think that you’re going to find YOUR newest favorite coaster there, too!
Chalkboard Coasters
Is there anything that chalkboard paint can’t do? Since I first created this tutorial I’ve discovered that I prefer chalk markers for decorating these coasters. Chalk markers are less eco-friendly, but they save guests from getting chalk on their hands right when they’re about to eat. Of course, if you keep the regular chalk you’ve got an excuse to make sure everyone actually washes their hands before dinner!
Upcycled Mosaic Coasters
RIP, darling Fiestaware! One of the benefits of using Fiestaware in any color I happen upon for my dishware is that as clumsy as we are in my family, I’ve always got plenty of colorful mosaic tesserae to play with! You can mosaic directly onto any old tiles, and the most widely available in my local Restore, the 4.25″ square ones, are the perfect size for DIY coasters.
Decoupaged Map Coasters
I love the idea of decoupaging maps of a place that has special meaning to you, but I’d be just as happy with a map of Egypt or England or Antarctica–I love maps! Don’t miss the cool trick the author of this tutorial has for keeping your decoupaged paper wrinkle-free.
Decoupaged Bar Coasters
Did a cardboard bar coaster just accidentally find its way into your purse and make its way home with you? Decoupage something cute onto the front and nobody has to know where that cute coaster originally came from!
Soda Can Coasters
Just when you thought that you’d decoupaged everything there is to decoupage, you find out that you can also decoupage soda cans! This would be a fun way to personalize a coaster set for someone who has a favorite canned drink.
Woven Magazine Coasters
The author recommends leaving these unsealed, and I love that idea, too! If the coasters stay unsealed, they’ll still last for quite a while. When they do get too wet to stay in service, just pop them into the recycling bin that they were headed for anyway, and make yourself a new set!
Scrabble Tile Coaster
Those orphaned Scrabble tiles don’t have to go to waste! I also love this project for upcycling other similar game pieces, like the tiles from Blokus or Katamino.
Upcycled CD Coasters
Upcycled CDs are such a clever choice for the internal layer of these quilted fabric coasters. They add all the stiffness and stability of a non-fabric coaster, with all the beauty of fabric!
Wood Slice Coasters
I do love upcycled crafts, but nature crafts are always my favorite. These wood slice coasters couldn’t be more simple and natural! To fancy them up you could stain them, seal them, wood burn them, or even paint them.
Mason Jar Lid Coasters
Y’all, I am ALWAYS looking for more ways to upcycle my old Mason jar lid rings! I love this idea of simply adding a cork base to them to make coasters.
Crocheted Sun Coasters
This is as close as we’re getting to sewing without actually sewing! Any scrap yarn in bright, happy colors works for this project. Or if all you have is non-bright, happy colors, make them anyway and call them something else!
Felt Scrap Geodes
Okay, maybe THIS is the project that’s closest to sewing without actually sewing. Cut up all your felt scraps and have fun with the process! This would also make an excellent rainy day craft for kids who are confident using a glue gun.
